MSP Airport job fair to take place at Hennepin County Library—Minneapolis Central

With unemployment near record lows in the Twin Cities, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) - the organization that owns and operates Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) - is taking a slightly different tack in holding its next job fair for MSP on May 6:

It'll be in downtown Minneapolis at the Hennepin County Library–Minneapolis Central. Typically, job fairs have been held at MSP Airport.

"We are always seeking new strategic partnerships to expand our reach and to help fill the thousands of jobs at MSP," said Liz Grzechowiak, assistant director of Concessions and Business Development for the MAC.

A busy urban hub
In addition to being a centralized location with access to public transportation, the Minneapolis Central Library has a team of employees and volunteers who assist patrons with job searches.

"Our second floor is one of the busiest public service points in our bustling, urban library," said Martha Hardy, a librarian in the Business, Science and Government Documents section of the Minneapolis Central Library. "Community organizations offer one-on-one consultations twice per week and accept appointments for individualized help. And library staff offer individualized job search help on Thursday afternoons in the computer lab."

Digital assessment
Those consultations cover everything from help drafting resumes and cover letters to basic computer training. In addition, job seekers can take the "Northstar Digital Literacy Assessment" test that measures their proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office (which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

"It's a nice amenity for job-seekers to be able to substantiate their basic computer skills required for most office jobs," said Grzechowiak.

In addition to the MAC, it's expected about 25 companies that operate at MSP will participate in the job fair.

A wide range of jobs are available at MSP, including in the food and beverage, retail, hotel, maintenance, airline and aviation fields.  Most jobs have highly competitive wages and offer extensive benefits.

The programs at the Minneapolis Central Library – as well as the MAC's English language courses – are designed to improve job-seekers' skills so they can move up the employment ladder.

Promoting opportunities
The unemployment rate in the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington area was 3.4 percent in February – among the lowest in the country for large metropolitan areas.

For this reason, the MAC founded the MSP Jobs Committee to assist airport employers in their ability to successfully recruit and retain employees. The committee seeks out incentives, program partners, certifications and a variety of other tactics to ensure a robust environment for career growth.
